Dial Up Networking

What do I do when I get the Error message "Dial up adapter is not installed or configured properly" ?

Sometimes Dial-up Networking, which is the part of Windows 95/98 that allows your modem to connect to the internet, can become corrupt, preventing a successful connection. The best way to test for this is by removing it and then replacing it. This will require your Windows 95/98 CD or .cab files.

  1. Double-click on My Computer located on your desktop, then on the Dial-up Networking folder within it.

  2. Click once on the Icon that dials MapleNet, and then select Rename from the File menu at the top of the window. You can name the Icon to something like MTC-old.

  3. Next go to the Start button, select Settings, and then Control Panel, then double-click on the Add/Remove Programs control panel.

  4. Select the Windows Setup tab at the top of the window, then double click on Communications in the list below.

  5. Remove the check from Dial-up Networking and Direct Cable Connection, if they are checked. When finished, press OK and then Apply on the main window.

  6. At this time windows will start moving files and shortcuts, proceed when it is finished. Double-click Communication once again, this time, putting the check back in Dial-up Networking only. Press OK and then Apply on the main window once again. Windows will then start moving files and possibly even ask you for your Windows 95/98 CD.

  7. You will then be prompted to restart the computer. Click OK, or YES.

  8. Once the computer has finished restarting, click the Start button, then select Settings, and then Control Panel. Double-click on the Network control panel.

  9. Once in the Network control panel press Add. From the next window select Protocol and then press the Add button on that window.

  10. Select Microsoft (you may need to scroll down) from the list on the left half of the window, then select TCP/IP on the right and press the OK button.

  11. Upon closing the Network control panel, you will be asked to restart at which time you will want to restart the computer.

  12. After restarting your computer, try reconnecting again
